Router Bits

Bob Gould, editor of Workbench magazine, says routers are rapidly growing in popularity among woodworkers. Trouble is, the more use a router gets, the more it demands of its bits. Avid do-it-yourselfers recognize the need to move toward industrial-quality products, and choosing the one with the right durability for the job is key:

  • For the weekend woodworker, occasional router projects using any type of wood usually can be handled by steel bits.
  • Carbid-tipped bits are best-suited for work with softwoods and fruitwoods.
  • Woodworkers cutting a lot of hardwoods for a major project will want the most durable router bits -- solid-carbide products.

Consider the work involved and decide how durable the bit must be, then compare the selection at your local tool center. Check the package for tips on how to select the right bit for the job.
